Auto Accident

Most of us at one point or another have had an automobile accident. Fortunately, most accidents are minor. Some people do not experience any pains from a minor accident as compared to some patients who experience a lot of stiffness, back or neck pain. One thing that is most important is that the symptoms may not be proportional to the amount of damage to the car. Patients may have more pain from a minor accident than from a severe accident. Most patients develop symptoms within a 24 hour period of having the accident. Patients may develop the following symptoms following an accident:

Neck pain (Whiplash)

When the accident occurs a sudden force may cause the neck to violently move into a foward or flexed position. Immediately following this movement the neck then moves violently back into the extended position. This is referred to a "whiplash" and is very common in most accidents. Neck pain as well as numbness, pins and needles and tingling in the arms and fingers may be associated or directly related to a whiplash injury. The pain in the neck is usually felt in the back of the neck and is usually dull and ache. Neck movements are very difficult and painful. Any movements may produce sudden and severe or sharp neck pain. The range of motion in the neck will be very limited by the pain. This is due to the muscles in the neck being very tight and inflamed from the accident. It is best to see a Chiropractor as soon as possible to help avoid the long term damage from this type of accident.

Headaches

Headaches are very common after a whiplash injury. The headache is usually felt at the back of the neck and can be severe and feel like they are never ending. These headaches can continue for weeks or sometimes months after the accident.

Dizziness

Dizziness can occur in a high percentage of patients suffering from a whiplash type of Injury.

Low back pain

Lower back pain is a very common and painful symptom resulting from an Auto Accident. The pain can be dull and ache or can be sharp. The tingling or the numbness in the legs or feet may also be a result of the accident.

Many people just think that if I just give it time it will go away. That is just not true. I have seen many patients present themselves years after an accident and not realize that the pain that they experience at that time can be related to the accident in the past. Again it is very important to have this type of condtion examined and properly diagnosed.
