We have all experienced neck pain in our lives. It hurts!
Some of us experience it more than others. Neck pain can be localized and cause pain just in the neck. A neck condition or problem can also lcause the pain to be experienced in the shoulder, arms and fingers. Neck pain can also cause headaches.
How can a neck problem casue pain in my shoulder, arms and hands?
It is called a referred pain. You can see in the chart that the nerves that exit out of the neck go down the shoulder and along the entire course of the arm and into the hand. Common complaints are pain in the shouder, tingling and numbness in the arms, hands and fingers.
The cervical spine (neck) consists of 7 vertebrae and 8 spinal nerves. Whe the vertebrae twist out of place, this is called in Chiropractic a subluxation, it cause pressure and irritation to these spinal nerves. This creates a compression or a "pinched Nerve" which results in pain along the course of the nerve. As stated before you may experience neck pain, shoulder and tingling/numbness in the hand and fingers.
These symptoms may also be cause by disc herniations, bulges as well as disc degeneration.
Chiropractic care has been very effective in treating this condition. Neck pain is one of the most commonly presented problems in our office.
